Arcade Fire - “Suburban War”

“Now the cities we live in could be distant stars, and I search for you in every passing car”

Maybe it’s because of the lyrics, or maybe I’m just imagining this - but in “Suburban War” it feels as though Win Butler’s voice evokes a rare essence like no other - he reveals the rare vulnerability of scar tissue that reminiscence can leave us with. Throughout “The Suburbs”, Arcade Fire are able to capture the idyllic free spirit of youth, whilst maintaining the maturity of adulthood - however, this song unearths the point in which the past and the present collide, and the result can ever so often leave us in a state of painful longing.

Every word and every note embodies the feeling of change.
